Ceph Overview — deploying and administering a distributed storage cluster

Ceph unifies within a single software infrastructure what SAN, NAS and object storage achieve separately, on standard servers and with no per-capacity licence cost. This entry-level course covers the architecture, deploying a cluster with the integrated orchestrator and operating the three storage interfaces, on a cluster dedicated to each participant.

Training objectives

  • Position Ceph among software-defined storage solutions and its release cycle.
  • Understand the RADOS architecture, the CRUSH algorithm and data placement.
  • Deploy a cluster with the orchestrator: monitors, managers and OSDs.
  • Operate the three interfaces: block, S3-compatible object and file system.
  • Secure access and connect an external client to the cluster.
  • Monitor the cluster through the dashboard, metrics and alerts.

Target audience

  • Systems administrators and storage engineers.
  • DevOps engineers, database administrators and HPC engineers.
  • Infrastructure architects.

Prerequisites

  • Advanced Linux administration: systemd, networking, logging.
  • Storage concepts: logical volumes, RAID, file systems.
  • Container and YAML syntax basics.

Detailed program

Day 1 — Architecture and deployment

  • Ceph positioning, release cycle and layered architecture
  • Cluster components: monitors, managers, OSDs and metadata servers
  • Deployment with the orchestrator: bootstrap, host management and labels

Day 2 — Data, pools and placement

  • OSDs and the storage engine: internal architecture and capacity expansion
  • Replicated and erasure-coded pools, placement groups and autoscaler
  • CRUSH, device classes and custom placement rules

Day 3 — Interfaces, security and monitoring

  • Block storage: thin provisioning, snapshots, clones and I/O testing
  • Object storage: S3 and Swift compatibility, users and buckets
  • Distributed file system, client authentication and monitoring
