OpenShift 4 — administration 2: production operations

Running OpenShift in production means administering operators, a release cycle, dynamic storage, integrated monitoring and a security posture. This second module covers day-two operations, up to a cluster upgrade carried out in the classroom by each participant.

Training objectives

  • Administer dynamic storage through the logical volume operator.
  • Master the operator lifecycle manager and catalogues.
  • Carry out a cluster upgrade and manage release channels.
  • Monitor the platform with the integrated metrics stack and its query language.
  • Harden: access control, security constraints and network policies.
  • Back up, restore and troubleshoot the platform.

Target audience

  • OpenShift cluster administrators.
  • SRE engineers and cloud native architects.
  • Operations teams running an enterprise platform.

Prerequisites

  • OpenShift administration 1 course or equivalent practice.
  • Advanced Linux administration.

Detailed program

Day 1 — Platform storage

  • Storage architecture and the dynamic provisioning model
  • Logical volume operator: volume groups and storage classes
  • Internal registry storage and network exports

Day 2 — Operators and catalogues

  • Operator framework and lifecycle manager architecture
  • Catalogues, sources and release channels
  • Subscriptions, install plans and approval policies

Day 3 — Cluster release cycle

  • Update architecture and the cluster version operator
  • Channels, extended support releases and upgrade paths
  • Progressive configuration rollout and in-class cluster upgrade

Day 4 — Observability and networking

  • Integrated monitoring: metrics, alerts and query language
  • Centralized logging and operator troubleshooting
  • Network policies and secure service exposure

Day 5 — Security and continuity

  • Authentication, access control and security context constraints
  • Backup, restore and platform continuity
  • Repository-driven deployment and closing workshop
