KVM, QEMU and libvirt — Linux virtualization from the ground up

KVM is the Linux kernel virtualization engine underpinning OpenStack, Proxmox VE and virtually every open source cloud. Understanding KVM, QEMU and libvirt means acquiring the key to reading all of these platforms, and the ability to diagnose what graphical interfaces hide.

Training objectives

  • Understand the KVM / QEMU architecture and the role of the libvirt layer.
  • Install and configure a KVM hypervisor and validate its operation.
  • Create and administer virtual machines from the command line.
  • Master storage: libvirt pools, disk formats and snapshots.
  • Configure virtual networks: NAT, bridge, Open vSwitch and SR-IOV.
  • Tune performance and diagnose a struggling hypervisor.

Target audience

  • Linux systems administrators.
  • Cloud and DevOps engineers seeking to understand the virtualization layer.
  • Support teams facing hypervisor diagnostics.

Prerequisites

  • Command-line Linux administration.
  • TCP/IP networking and storage management basics.

Detailed program

Day 1 — Foundations and first hypervisor

  • Hardware virtualization, KVM, QEMU and the libvirt layer
  • Hypervisor installation and validation
  • Creating virtual machines from the command line

Day 2 — Storage and networking

  • libvirt pools and volumes, qcow2 and raw formats
  • Snapshots, cloning and template-based provisioning
  • Virtual networks: NAT, bridge and Open vSwitch

Day 3 — Performance, automation and diagnostics

  • VirtIO tuning, huge pages, CPU affinity and NUMA
  • Automation through XML definitions, cloud-init and scripting
  • Live migration, metrics and incident resolution
