Proxmox VE — from the first node to a hyperconverged cluster

As proprietary licensing costs rise, Proxmox VE has established itself as the leading open source virtualization platform: virtual machines and containers brought together in a single interface. This course covers the entire lifecycle, from installing the first node to a highly available cluster, with an end-to-end iSCSI SAN deployment and integrated Ceph storage.

Training objectives

  • Understand the Proxmox VE architecture and its internal components.
  • Install, configure and update a Proxmox VE 9.x node.
  • Master the network stack: bridges, bonds, VLANs, SDN, VXLAN and firewall.
  • Operate virtual machines and containers: Cloud-Init, snapshots, cloning.
  • Deploy LVM, ZFS and NFS storage and an iSCSI SAN with multipath.
  • Build a highly available cluster, Ceph storage and a backup chain.

Prerequisites

  • Solid command-line Linux administration skills.
  • Virtualization concepts and TCP/IP networking.

Day 1 — Fundamentals, installation and networking

  • Architecture, ecosystem and positioning against proprietary solutions
  • Node installation, repository and update management
  • Bridges, bonds, VLANs and link aggregation

Day 2 — Advanced networking and workloads

  • Software-defined networking: zones, VNets, IPAM and VXLAN
  • Integrated firewall: Datacenter, Node and guest levels
  • Virtual machines, LXC containers and Cloud-Init deployment

Day 3 — Local, remote and SAN storage

  • LVM, LVM-Thin and ZFS pools
  • NFS storage and iSCSI protocol principles
  • End-to-end iSCSI SAN deployment and multipath configuration

Day 4 — Cluster, high availability and administration

  • Building a Corosync cluster with redundant links
  • HA groups, fencing and failover scenarios
  • Users, RBAC roles and LDAP / Active Directory integration

Day 5 — Backup, hyperconvergence and migration

  • Proxmox Backup Server: datastore, retention and restore
  • Integrated Ceph deployment: RBD pools and CephFS
  • Cold and live migration on shared storage, closing workshop
