OpenStack Administration 1 — running a private cloud day to day

OpenStack is the reference platform for building a controlled infrastructure as a service, in a context of data sovereignty and migration away from proprietary solutions. This first module trains the domain operator: the person who provisions projects, networks, storage and applications for cloud users.

Training objectives

  • Understand the OpenStack architecture and how its services fit together.
  • Manage projects, users, roles and resource quotas.
  • Design project networks and provider networks.
  • Launch and operate instances, private then publicly exposed.
  • Administer storage: ephemeral disks, volumes, object and shared storage.
  • Automate instance startup and orchestrate an application stack.

Target audience

  • Domain operators and cloud project administrators.
  • Systems administrators and DevOps engineers.
  • Project teams involved in a private cloud programme.

Prerequisites

  • Command-line Linux administration at a confirmed level.
  • Virtualization and TCP/IP networking basics.

Detailed program

Day 1 — Architecture and identity

  • Cloud overview, user profiles and service architecture
  • Exploring the platform through the web console and command line
  • Identity: domains, projects, users and role assignment

Day 2 — Governance and networking

  • Resource quotas and project governance
  • TCP/IP refresher and software-defined networking principles
  • Project and provider networks, subnets and routers

Day 3 — Instances and block storage

  • Resources required at launch: images and compute flavours
  • Launching and verifying a non-public instance
  • Ephemeral disks and persistent volumes

Day 4 — Storage strategies

  • Snapshots, backups and volume restore
  • S3- and Swift-compatible object storage
  • Shared file storage and distributed file systems

Day 5 — Public access and automation

  • Security groups, key pairs and floating IP addresses
  • Customizing instances at startup
  • Application stack orchestration, placement and knowledge validation

Certification
